Brew Donkey replaces plastic bottled water with cans
A critical social media post one year ago triggered Brew Donkey to make positive changes
OTTAWA, ONTARIO – July 30th, 2019 – Brew Donkey, Ottawa’s first and only brewery tour service, will now start offering exclusively canned water on the bus as part of the tour experiences, replacing the complimentary plastic bottles that were provided in the past.
"In June of 2018, we posted a photo of a staff surrounded by plastic bottles of water to our social media accounts in an effort to let them know we were prepared for the hot weather of the coming weekend.”, says owner/operator, Brad Campeau.
The photo received a critical comment from a follower, stating simply “bottled water” and three thumbs down. The validity of the comment registered with the already Bullfrog Powered tour company and over the last 8 months, ownership and staff at the company have taken the time to brainstorm how to remove the plastic waste from the tours.
Alexi Merkis, the newly hired Operations Manager for the company, was the most vocal on the subject. Owner Brad Campeau credits his continued requests and attention to fixing this problem as the catalyst to removing plastic bottled water on the tours.
The production of the canned water is done in partnership with Beyond the Pale Brewing Company, a destination partner of Brew Donkey Tours. “I responded to the request almost instantly. It just makes good sense and if we can help, why not? The craft beer industry is all about supporting each other.” says Beyond the Pale Co-founder and Owner, Shane Clark.
The switch from plastic to cans will see the company cut their contribution to waste by 5500 plastic bottles a year. The new canned water is on buses starting today and will be offered up to all guests between stops to make sure they remain hydrated and consume craft beer responsibly.
